Depth Of Field 2D game

Messing around with a new way to give my backgrounds more depth, so I'm experimenting with Depth of field. The first and second halves of the video are subtle, but different. The first half has the distant background elements blurred and the foreground objects sharp, the second half of the video has everything sharp. Is the first half just too weird, or does it look nice to you? I'm just wondering what you think about each example and what looks better. (maybe raise the quality on the player so you can make out the difference better)
